Just two months ago, Kristina was about to begin graduate school in counseling psychology. She had stopped working and was buying textbooks, furnishing her new home, and looking forward to her studies and the fall season.
Then on a trip to the countryside in Lake County she had to be rushed at midnight to the Emergency room at Sutter Lakeside hospital. After determining that her hemoglobin was dangerously low and giving her one of the three blood transfusions she would receive over the next three weeks, the physicians decided to do a CT scan. They were quite surprised to find what appeared to be a 4cm mass growing in her colon. Many tests, doctors and long stays in two other hospitals have followed as she returned to Martinez for treatment. It was eventually determined that the mass was involved with the uterus and after various tests it was determined to be a type of uterine cancer. The surgeons decided to act quickly.
On October 3rd Kristina had a 6-hour surgery during which they removed her uterus, ovaries, appendix and a section of her colon. Drs. Lerner and Edraki, her surgeons, did an outstanding job and were able to remove all of the visible cancerous tissue as well as 34 of her lymph nodes in the area. Three of these nodes were found to be cancerous and cancer cells were also found in the peritoneal fluid. The tumor was determined to be a high-grade adenocarcinoma and appeared to have begun in her uterine ligament and spread to her uterus and colon. This is a very serious and aggressive kind of cancer and her official diagnosis is Stage IV uterine cancer.
Kristina’s surgeons, her oncologist, and her gynecologist are strongly recommending chemotherapy to destroy any remaining cancer cells that may be in her body. After much deliberation about the best approach to treating this condition Kristina has decided to do the chemotherapy which will start the second week of November. The chemotherapy treatment will last from 4 ½ to 6 months.
At the same time we are pursuing all the best alternative treatments to support her health through the chemo, to help make the chemo more effective and to continue the process of healing her body completely. Because Kristina lost quite a bit of weight from the illness and while in the hospitals, it is crucial that she rebuild her strength and gain back the weight before and during the intensive chemotherapy treatment.
In addition to her oncologist we are working with an integrative oncologist, acupuncturist, herbalist and a nutritionist – any healing modality that can be brought to bear is being sought out. Time is of the essence and there are many resources that can help together.
Kristina’s financial resources are very sparse. About to start school again, she had taken out student loans and planned on working part time to support her self. Now she has returned her loans and is unable to work due to the surgery and upcoming treatment. Her partner David has left work to help her through this passage and they have very little in savings.
So far this is a grim story. But there is a powerful force here as well. That is the love, care and support that are surrounding Kristina as she faces the deepest challenge of her life. Her family, friends and community are coming together to give her the best chance we can for her to be completely healed and continue her journey of service and love with all of us.
At this point we think that at least a portion of her hospital bills will be covered by her basic insurance, but how much is still being determined. They could easily be tens of thousands of dollars. She will need help with things as basic as rent and food and other living expenses. The complimentary treatments will be expensive and are not covered by any insurance. We want to be able to do all this for her, but we can’t do it alone.
Please join us in sending your support and love to our beloved bodhisattva Kristina. Please help us do everything that we can to keep her with us and let her shine her beauty and soul with us for many years to come.
Thank you so much.

‘Penetrated’ was possibly not the best term for the Man Of Steel to use at that moment.
